The aim of English for Architects and Engineers is to improve their professional communication skills. The course covers high-priority language as follows:
-
Use of case studies and situation-based activities
-
Useful language presented and practised in professional contexts
-
Authentic and challenging texts to make your learning interesting and motivating
-
Realistic listening activities that enable participants to engage in technical and business conversations
A Task-Based Learning (TBL) Approach
In a task-based lesson the teacher does not pre-determine what language will be studied. The lesson is based around the completion of a central task and the language studied is determined by what happens as participants complete it.
The teacher introduces the topic and gives participants clear instructions on what they will have to do to complete the task, and helps them to recall the language that may be useful.
Participants complete a task in pairs or groups using the language resources that they have as the teacher monitors and offers encouragement. They prepare oral or written reports to tell others what happened during their task.
They then practise what they are going to say in their groups. Meanwhile the teacher is available for the participants to ask for advice to clear up any language questions they may have.
Finally, the teacher selects language areas to practise based upon the needs of participants and what emerged from the task and report phases. Participants engage in activities that increase their confidence and make notes of useful language.
The Advantages of TBL
A natural context is developed from participants’ experiences with language that is personalised and relevant to them. They also have a much more varied exposure to technical and business language and are encouraged to use a wider range of phrases, vocabulary and language patterns. It is a strong communicative approach where they spend a lot of time communicating. It is enjoyable and motivating. Most importantly, the language explored arises from participants’ specific needs.
